3 day weekends always make me think of the years I spent living in San Francisco and all the trips I took down to Half Moon Bay. Being a born and bread New Englander, Sam’s Chowder House was always our first stop on one of these adventures. It’s this cute little restaurant stuck right on the bay and has won numerous awards including “Top Three Outdoor Dining Spots in the Bay Area” by San Francisco Magazine, and Sante Magazine’s Service Hospitality Award. It was also featured on NBC-TV’s The TODAY Show for Sam’s famous Lobster Rolls, selected by the Food Editor as one of the five “Best Sandwiches in America”. And let me tell you, they weren’t kidding! Even on a gloomy day Sam’s is a great place to hangout and relax. They’ve got big fire pits and the spiciest Bloody Mary’s you’ve ever tasted. Here are a few must-try dishes:
Sam’s Lobster Roll – Delicious Maine lobster lightly tossed with butter on a toasted specialty bun, potato chips and coleslaw
Jumbo Prawns Stuffed – With Dungeness crab and wrapped in smoked bacon with roasted garlic mashed potatoes, daylight farms Italian chard and a creamy horseradish sauce.
Sam’s Albacore Tuna Melt – Olive oil poached albacore tuna sandwich with cheddar cheese; served with a fuji apple, toasted almond and field greens (pictured)
Like I said, no matter what time of year or what kind of weather you’re dealing with, Sam’s is the way to go. There are some great beaches in this area and it’s so fun to just pack up for the day and do the scenic drive. If you happen to be in the Bay Area anytime soon, make sure you also lookout for Sam’s Chowdermobile – their rocking on the go food truck!
